2022 Fall Lecture – Finding Marion
November 3, 2022 @ 7:00 pm - 8:30 pm
Free
Join us for the Cooley House Foundation’s FREE Fall Lecture by Glenda Korporaal, Australian journalist and author of “Making Magic, the Marion Mahony Griffin Story”.
Marion Mahony Griffin and Walter Burley Griffin designed the Cooley House for Monroe, Louisiana in 1908. It was constructed in 1926 and is a rare example of Prairie style architecture in the southern United States. As it was their last residential project constructed in the US, it shows hybrid design elements from their time in Illinois and Australia. In 1913, Marion and Walter won the international design competition for Canberra, Australia’s new capital city, working the rest of their careers in Australia and India.
Marion was the second female graduate in architecture at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) and the first female licensed architect in Illinois. Both Marion and Walter were employees of Frank Lloyd Wright at one time. Marion’s beautiful renderings of Wright’s early works are as iconic as his designs.
This is a VIRTUAL Presentation that begins at 7:00 p.m. (CST). Registrants will be emailed a link to join the presentation.
